| Sylvia Boaz |
 |
| Sylvia Constance Boaz, is known
by many in the dance world not as a renown dancer who danced major roles but as a dancer
unrecognized whose claim to fame is attributed to her grace and determination and the love
of dance. Sylvia commenced her dance career with the worlds
best known artistic director, educator, choreographer and dancer Arthur Mitchell at the Dance
Theatre of Harlem. She received a dance scholarship from Authur Mitchell,
where she continued her dance training for six years. Arthur Mitchell, Karl Shook, and
Tania Laclerq and others trained Sylvia. Being a Native New Yorker she trained with great
teachers like David Howard, John Barker, and Tom Adair in New York City. After leaving New
York she traveled to Washington D.C. where she trained with Mary Day of the Washington
Ballet Co and others. Sylvias dance experience includes; dancing with the Hudson
Valley Dance Theater Company in Poughkeepsie, NY, and with the District of Columbia City
Ballet in Washington DC. In San Diego, she trained with mentor Heidi Giersch-Schmidth. She
also danced in performances at the JCs in San Diego and the Lemon Grove Art Complex.
She most recently danced with City Ballet and has been from 1994-2000. She has performed in City
Ballets Carmina Burana, Carmen, Midsummers Night Dream, "Giselle"
Act II, and the annual Nutcracker. Sylvia spent 10 years in the US Navy, where aside
from her job as an Aircrewman, she traveled all over the world and took Ballet classes in
Switzerland, France, Spain, Portugal, Norway, England, Japan, Italy and many more. It was
this pivot in career from dancer to a career in the military where she
decided to one day opening her own dance studio. She is the proud owner of Balletiquette.
This is a dream come true, she hopes
through her step of faith she will encourage others to believe.
Sylvia attended Howard University and studied Elementary Education and later got her
bachelors degree in Education at Southern Illinois University. She is an educator
and works as an academic advisor for the US Navy as a full time Civil Service Worker.
After work she conducts the after school dance program at Balletiquette.
Each summer she teaches 40 children from Horizon Christian Youth Program, how
to dance in two weeks. Sylvias mission is to provide children and adults everywhere
with the opportunity to learn and experience the discipline of dance and the joy of the
performing arts. It is this experience of discipline and the love of God
that makes her many experiences in life so successful. She believes movement is
the core to human activity. She hopes to see you at the studio to share a time to
dance.
